Refugee Programs

Over the years, Canada has provided shelter to many refugees who seek protection. There are two types of refugees: A convention refugee or a person in need of protection. The applicant seeking asylum is assigned to one of the two categories and the decision is made by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

A convention refugee is one that is ousted from their country and is not able to return to their country of citizenship or residence.

There are two classes of convention refugees:

First one is Convention refugee abroad class in which claimant is outside their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based upon Race, Religion, Nationality, Membership of a particular social group or Political Opinion, still forces human race to look for a shelter somewhere away from their home.

Convention refugee aboard class can be sponsored by:

  • the Government of Canada (government-assisted refugees),
  • a group of people or an organization (privately sponsored refugees), or
  • a mix of both (blended visa office-referred refugees).

Second one is a country of asylum class is the one where convention refugees are outside their home country, or the country where they normally live and have been seriously affected by civil war or armed conflict or have been denied basic human rights on an ongoing basis. Country of asylum class refugees can be privately sponsored.

On the other hand, a person who need protection inside the country of Canada and are not able to return to their home country because of a danger of torture or a risk to their life or a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment are also given shelter by Canada.

Canada has an effective refugee program that is well-aimed at providing protection to the those who need that protection.
